With a rebel heart, Maya Alyssum has had one dream throughout her life, to open a school where children are loved no matter appearance, personality, etc. Her dream has come true were she once grew up in a small town, in an old farm house. Maya herself spent her life as an outcast, going from foster home to foster home, along with her older sister Cleo. But a fight for Maya's dream begins within Patricia Rice's book Dixie Rebel as town officials try to destroy her small school and her heart.

Axell Holm, is a council representative, and being a single parent with his own small restaurant he's a very busy man. His stress only increases because of his mother-in-law threatens to take away his daughter Constance. But Constance who hasn't spoken since her mother's death, is beginning to open up through the help of Maya's new after-school program. When the town officials threaten to close down the school for a new strip mall, Axell see's the opportunity to offer help to an unconventional women. Maya, with her sister in jail on drug charges, a nephew that needs carrying for, and a baby on  the way sees her school as a sanctuary for the children and herself. Cornered without very many options, Maya must trust a man she only just met and take on the town council in order to provided for her family.

Patricia Rice's Dixie Rebel shows how two people with no romantic interests can become something more. Axell and Maya's romantic journey is a real page turner that has in the past and will in the future attract many readers. Within Dixie Rebel many secrets will change the course of these two individuals and will result in a bright outcome for both. An additional series called the Carolina Trilogy comprises of three books, the initial and first is about Cleo, Maya's sisters and is titled Almost Perfect.
